Film Analysis: Editing Choices Reflect Cultural Norms

Intermixed with scenes of glitz and glamor in the film, there are moments of deeply personal reflection and explanations of the motivation behind ball culture. Through two episodes, we see two differing views of the ball culture that are connected through their emotional ties. We see a group of people attempting to conform to a world that is rejecting them, even though they should fit into this society to begin with. These clips bring to light the hopes and dreams of some of the contestants and the importance of the balls to these dreams, which allows the audience to see the contestants on a much more personal level. Both of these episodes give insight into the deep seeded desires of the ball queens to fit into a society that refuses to accept them, while also giving us an air of personal identification that allows the audience to see similar core values. Overall, the episodes help show the unimportance of cultural norms in dictating what is and isn’t, as well as reinforcing that we’re all just human.
